Dr. Powderly is Director of the Washington University AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) which conducts clinical research and participates in clinical trials for persons with HIV-associated disease. Since its inception 1987, 2500 HIV-infected persons have been evaluated at the ACTU and over 1200 have been enrolled in mainly multicenter clinical trials of new agents for primary HIV infection or for its associated opportunistic infection. In addition, many patients have volunteered to participate in other clinical research protocols at this unit.
A particular focus of Dr. Powderly's has been the investigation of the treatment and prevention of most of the opportunistic infections associated with AIDS, especially fungal infections. In addition to active participation in clinical drug trials, the ACTU is also conducting clinical research in AIDS-related problems, including on the neuropsychiatric manifestations of HIV-1 infection, the changing epidemiology of opportunistic infection in advanced HIV diseases, and non-invasive diagnosis of HIV-related neurologic disease.
Collaborative projects are conducted with several university laboratories examining basic virologic and immunologic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of HIV infection and of several of the associated opportunistic infections including toxoplasmosis, disseminated mycobacterial infections and herpes virus infections. In addition, collaborative clinical studies of new antifungal agents are performed as part of the NIAID Mycoses Study group.
