Research activities: Hospital epidemiology is the science studying events that happen to people in the hospital. This includes nosocomial infections, adverse events, as well as outcomes. We study risk factors for nosocomial or "hospital acquired" infections in order to decrease their frequency. Our clinical research in infection control regularly tracks infections within the hospital through surveillance and epidemiologic investigation to decrease the risk of infectious outbreaks and epidemics. Current research interests include fungemia, surgical wound infections, problems with endoscope disinfection, and nosocomial transmission of atypical mycobacteria. The epidemiology of tuberculosis is changing and we are studying patients as well as employees to identify ways to limit the spread of TB in the 90's. Other risks to health care workers, including needlestick injuries are being studied as well.
