Three year fellowships in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology and Immunology are being offered at Washington University School of Medicine. Stipends range from $35,000 to $39,000 per annum, depending on previous training.

Prospective fellows should have strong interests in clinical infectious diseases and in research. The research program functions jointly with the doctoral and postdoctoral program in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at Washington University. Almost all of the members of the Infectious Diseases Division have academic appointments in the Department of Molecular Microbiology, and there is minimal, if any distinction between the two programs.

The research activities of the Division are complemented by an active teaching and clinical program. Barnes and Jewish Hospitals and the John Cochran V.A. Hospitals are the principal teaching hospitals in the Medical Center. The Infectious Disease Division sees about 1,500 consultations per year in every medical and surgical subspecialty. We have an active office practice which includes AIDS patients. Trainees provide consultations under the close supervision of full time faculty members in the Division of Infectious Diseases. A rotation with the Pediatric Infectious Disease Unit is also available. In addition to the clinical conferences, rounds and lectures provided by the Department of Medicine, the Infectious Disease Division has graduate courses in microbiology, infectious diseases, study design and biostatistics also informal conferences that cover every aspect of infectious diseases. Rotations through the clinical laboratories (bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, mycobacteriology, infectious serology and virology) also provide first hand experience in each of these areas.
